Mt Etna volcano

Mt Etna is the largest active volcano in Europe. It has an elliptical base (38 x 47 km) and a maximum elevation of about 3350 m. The volcano dominates the landscape of NE Sicily, Italy. Mt Etna has the longest period of documented eruptions in the world. Etna is noted for the wide variety of eruption styles. The volcano is at its most spectacular when when both summit and flank eruptions occur simultaneously.

Stromboli volcano

Stromboli is the northeastern most of the Aeolian Islands. Stromboli volcano has one of the world's longest recorded periods of activity. The active craters are located 100-150 m below Pizzo sopra la Fossa. A collapse depression called Sciara del Fuoco is located below the active craters.

Yasur Volcano

Yasur volcano, in southern Vanuatu is one of the world's most active volcanoes. The volcano has erupted many times per hour for at least 800 years. Yasur has been called the "Lighthouse of the Pacific" because of the regular Strombolian eruptions visible from sea.

Ambrym Volcano

Ambrym Island is the Jewel of the Pacific. The island is located in central Vanuatu and contains one of the world's most active volcanoes. Lava lakes regularly appear in the summit craters. Several times per century, Ambrym volcano erupts violently. In 1913-14 the volcano produced the largest eruption in 400 years in Melanesia. The island is located in central Vanuatu along the main shipping lane between Port Vila and Espiritu Santo. The island is also noted for magic, sand drawing, rom dance, and tamtam carvings.

Tinakula Volcano

Tinakula is an active volcano 40 km from Santa Cruz island. The island has an impressive stratovolcano shape. An active summit crater ejects glowing lava bombs down the SW side of the volcano. Tinakula Island used to be inhabited before the 1971 eruption and tsunami. The volcano has been known to be active since reported by Mendana in 1595.
